Science is Discovery – Chemistry in PreK!
Ms. Brenda’s Class
The children in Ms. Brenda’s class were curious about how ice went from a solid to a liquid. They experimented by watching ice cubes melt. But could they turn liquid into a solid?
They decided to try by making ice cream in a bag – a chemistry experiment that was fun and delicious. They used salt, half and half, sugar, ice cubes, and Ziploc bags with some other ingredients to make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream. They practiced measuring, reading, and using a knife to cut. They had fun shaking the bags and observed how ice cubes and salt cooled and hardened the other ingredients and turned them into ice cream.
Ava – We had to wear gloves to shake the ice cream. It was cold. We used rock salt to keep it cold. We used sugar, milk, ice, rock salt all in the bag.
Hasson – We had to measure and follow the recipe. The spoon says 1 and 3 that is one third.
Kingston – I like the chocolate!
Laila – I like the cherry!
Alaiyah – Look! I still have all my fingers I did not cut them when I was cutting the strawberries!
Ms. Brenda and Hasson agreed – We used too much sugar and it was too sweet
